April 23rd is World Reading Day. The list of "Guangzhou’s 100 favorite extracurricular books after 00" was released. The top three books were Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Journey to the West and Charles IX, and Shen Shixi and Keigo Higashino became the most popular writers among Guangzhou teenagers.
It is reported that the list was released by Guangdong Youth Career Research and Development Center. Through open answering, the research group selected 31 classes in 15 primary and secondary schools in Guangzhou and distributed 1,600 questionnaires. Respondents reported their favorite extracurricular books, and obtained a total of 765 titles. After assigning values according to certain rules, they sorted the top 100 books from high to low and discharged the list.
Teenagers love "cool writing", and fantasy novels account for 19%.
As a researcher and project host of Guangdong Youth Career Research and Development Center, Liao Genshen, born after 60, felt after seeing the list: more than half of the titles have never been heard. The list shows three characteristics of teenagers’ reading: digital reading fever, fantasy novel fever and "cure" novel fever.
Liao Genshen found that a large number of books on the list have been written in the past ten years, and 9% of them are online novels, such as Notes on Grave Robbery, Master, Breaking the Sky, etc. The popularity of online novels is closely related to teenagers’ reading habits. One of the multiple-choice questions in the survey was "Which way do you read after class?" Among them, 60.6% students chose to read by mobile phone and 13.8% by computer. Correspondingly, 56.1% people choose to read paper books and 15.2% people choose to read magazines.
Two sets of data show that digital reading goes hand in hand with traditional paper reading, which has become the two most important extracurricular reading methods for teenagers in Guangzhou. The digital reading craze also brings the fantasy novel craze: among the top 10 in the list, 6 are fantasy novels, and 19% of the books in the whole list are fantasy novels.
In this regard, Professor Tian Feng, deputy director of the Youth Research Office of the Institute of Sociology, China Academy of Social Sciences, believes that teenagers’ cognitive development of thinking has reached a certain level, they feel that they have power, and they begin to imagine challenging authority. But they don’t have enough social status to realize their ideals and ambitions. Fantasy novels give them a "secret garden"-here, the mediocre protagonist grows up through his own efforts and personal adventures, and finally saves the world. "This kind of routine can better poke the hearts of teenagers, which is commonly known as’ Shuang Wen’."
In addition, the representative "cured" novels in the list account for 7%, such as The Kite Runner, Worry-Free Grocery Store and The Ferryman. Professor Lin Nan, director of Guangdong Youth Career Research and Development Center, believes that the novel "Healing System" meets the psychological demands of the current teenagers. "Although they didn’t enter the society after 00, they have been under great growth pressure since they were young. What followed was an increase in psychological confusion and troubles, and the’ cure’ novel just met this demand. "
The dominant position of the four classical masterpieces cannot be shaken.
Teenagers’ extracurricular reading is a long-term follow-up research topic of Guangdong Youth Career Research and Development Center. A survey is conducted every 10 years to track the intergenerational changes of teenagers’ extracurricular reading. The last survey was conducted in 2008, and the target was "post-90 s" teenagers.
Comparing the results of the two surveys, Liao Genshen believes that the charm of classical literature is beyond the times. Four Great Classical Novels’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Journey to the West’s The Water Margin and A Dream of Red Mansions ranked 1st, 3rd, 7th and 18th respectively in the 2008 list. In the 2018 list, they ranked 1 ST, 2 nd, 12 th and 18 th respectively. In addition, Chinese and foreign classics such as Two Wan Li under the Sea, Camel Xiangzi, Robinson Crusoe, Childhood, etc. also rank high, and are deeply loved by two generations of teenagers.
This is largely due to school education. Liu Hong, a special-grade teacher in Guangdong Province and head of the Chinese Department of Guangzhou No.16 Middle School, said that the school will regularly carry out various types of reading activities of famous works, including reading classics, watching film and television works adapted from classic works, and writing, directing and acting famous bridges in classic literature. She believes that in the process of reading classics, students construct language, develop thinking, broaden their horizons and enhance their aesthetic ability.
It is worth noting that there are 43 kinds of imported works in the two lists, and the literary works of the United States, Japan, Britain and France account for a relatively large proportion. Liao Genshen said that many foreign literary works have been popular all over the country for more than ten years, which reflects that China’s cultural industry still faces the embarrassment of not many fine products. Creating more cultural masterpieces is a major issue facing the development of China’s cultural industry.
Martial arts novels disappeared from the list of "after 00"
Compared with the reading list that the "post-90 s" like, the post-00 s have their own preferences.
The most remarkable change is the disappearance of martial arts novels in the rankings. In 2008, there were three martial arts novels in the rankings. In the 2018 list, this figure is zero. Martial arts novels, represented by Jin Yong and Gu Long, have profoundly influenced the three generations of teenagers, namely, the post-60s, the post-70s and the post-80s. However, their influence in the post-90s declined, and basically declined after the post-00s.
Also falling are Japanese comics. In the 2008 rankings, there were 9 Japanese books on the list, while in the 2018 rankings, only one Japanese comic/painting book, Historical Records of the East, was on the list. The domestic cartoons are hilarious campus, hilarious kingdom and fiction painting.
The reading share of martial arts novels and Riman was largely replaced by fantasy novels, and the proportion in the rankings increased from 7% in 2008 to 19%.
At the same time, periodicals have greatly cooled down among "post-00" teenagers, and the scenery is no longer there. In the list of 2008, traditional periodicals accounted for 17%, while in the list of 2018, periodicals only accounted for 5%. Only readers, children’s literature, stories, fiction painting and Yilin were on the list. This is also the inevitable result of the heat shock of digital reading.
Parents and teachers have too little influence on extracurricular reading after 00.
Liao Genshen said that the favorite books in adolescence have an important influence on the ideological and political quality of teenagers and the formation of "three views". Therefore, he hopes to understand the extracurricular reading trends of teenagers through this survey and guide them to read more extracurricular books and read them well.
Liu Hong basically agrees with the ranking of books. However, she admits that students’ reading is very random and blind, which requires targeted guidance from parents and teachers.
However, two sets of data in the survey show that the influence of parents and teachers in extracurricular reading after 00 is getting lower and lower, or even absent. 87.6% of teenagers choose extracurricular books independently or recommended by classmates, while only 1.9% and 10.5% are recommended by parents and teachers. In addition, only 21% of the books recommended by Chinese curriculum standards for compulsory education and Chinese curriculum standards for ordinary senior high schools account for extracurricular reading, which is not optimistic.
In this regard, Liao Genshen suggested that parents and teachers should recommend extracurricular reading materials based on the growth needs of teenagers when recommending bibliographies to students, so as to meet the curiosity of teenagers when reading, gain a happy experience and answer the growing confusion. At the same time, we should be good at actively exchanging reading experience with teenagers, and we should read synchronously with them if possible, so as to have a dialogue with teenagers and give them timely guidance. Finally, we should pay attention to correcting the reading tendency of poor guidance, such as excessive commercialization and utilitarianism of some online works, incorrect ideological orientation, low taste and vulgar content. However, he also believes that simply and rudely "prohibiting" or "opposing" the bad reading tendency among teenagers is often ineffective, which tests the wisdom and guiding skills of parents and teachers.
