China | Artists Group

Use a brush to record the fight against epidemic, support the fight against epidemic, and summon up courage.

After the Spring Festival in previous years, domestic art exhibitions recovered and reached a peak in February and March, but this time the COVID-19 epidemic suppressed almost all post-holiday art activities.

However, during the restless Spring Festival, artists in China did not stop their artistic expression.

In Wuhan, which is closed to the city, artists continue to paint and write about the expectation of the end of the epidemic and the blooming of spring, or record everything around them with a brush. A Wuhan painter recorded everything he saw and heard with a sketch, and wrote: "In this case, in order to have spiritual support and spend a difficult lonely time, he began to record the mentality and experience of different people through a brush. There are me, family members of front-line medical staff, ordinary isolated people, front-line medical staff, grassroots party member, as well as couriers, cleaners and front-line duty personnel … We are all sentient beings, living the most real life in Wuhan at the moment. At this moment, all this is still with palpitations, with the temperature between breaths, with loss and hope … "

One of them is:

The circle of friends saw a friend get up early and go to work, wearing a simple mask and carrying dry food, so they wanted to see the ordinary feelings of a grassroots party member.

"It is necessary to say that it is not afraid that it is fake, and that the mask alcohol does not go out, but I always believe that the initial chaos does not mean powerlessness and giving up. On the contrary, it means greater scale and greater control. Facts have proved this point, the so-called city closure, if not everyone’s conscious, simply can not be sealed. This is civilization, this is tolerance! This is the Wuhan people who refuse to obey Zhou and believe in evil! When this wave passes, I will proudly say to the world:’ I am from Wuhan! ! !’ "

When night fell, I saw five confirmed cases reported by a school hospital in a surrounding city, including two ordinary citizens, one nurse and two grassroots cadres. There are still a large number of people waiting at the hospital gate, doctors are still there, nurses are still there, and grassroots cadres are also there. This is the capillary of a city, which is the terminal, but all of them are on the job. Panic is still expanding, jobs are still busy, and work is still in order!

Finally, share a sentence from this friend in the circle of friends: "It’s really not easy for everyone. I admire all of us! "

"Lunar New Year’s Day. I saw a friend on the roof in my circle of friends, so I asked him why. The friend said,’ Come out and watch the wind on the roof.’ But I see that the city behind me is still brightly lit, but she is not as warm as before, obviously so close to us, but why does it feel so far away?

The city we live in is angry! We were wrong! We need you! We want to be close to you! We are all reflecting, behind closed doors, on why you were so gentle and tolerant. We want to go out, think of your arms, and want you to tolerate us with a smile! When will you smile for us again? We are looking forward to it! "

On the morning of January 31st, the Shanghai Book Association sent a letter to the consultant of the Shanghai Book Association, "Uniting as One to Fight the Epidemic Disaster-Special Invitation for Calligraphy and Seal Cutting Creation". Up to now, 47 directors of the Shanghai Calligraphy Association have created calligraphy seal cutting, hoping that through the calligrapher’s pen and ink and carving knife, they will gather together and inspire their fighting spirit, and contribute to the current epidemic prevention and war prevention.

San Francisco | Artist Sweet Cecily Danielle

Sue Disney and Pixar Animation, and the new film Forward is suspected of infringing its image as a "unicorn truck"

According to The Art Newspaper, Sweet Cecily Daniher, an artist in San Francisco, USA, is suing Pixar Animation, Disney and producer Kori Rae because the upcoming animated film "Onward" stole the image of her truck with a unicorn without permission.

According to the documents provided by Danielle to the court, in 2014, Daniher bought a dark blue/purple 1972 Chevy G10 van, and she painted a unicorn on the side of the van, which is her favorite pattern and the theme throughout her career. Danielle’s van "meticulously depicts colors and shadows, the mane of unicorns fluttering, the flashing light, the overall appearance and the psychedelic visual presentation."

Later, Danielle presented the car at the Auto Art Exhibition in San Francisco, and named her work "Vanicorn".

In September 2018, Jane Clausen, a representative of Pixar Animation, contacted Danielle by email and proposed to rent a truck unicorn for a day of Pixar employees’ family activities. The email also showed that "it is a prop and will not be used for any other purpose." However, in May 2019, Danielle discovered that a character named Guinevere appeared in the upcoming animation Forward, and the description of the character was her "truck unicorn", but it was called "God Horse" instead of "unicorn" in the animation.

According to the indictment, on June 3, 2019, Danielle received a phone call from the film producer Kori Rae, who "created the role of Guinevere to steal the unicorn from the truck and apologized to the plaintiff", and insisted that the reason why she was not informed at that time was that the cartoon had not yet been rented, so it was impossible to sign any confidentiality clause with the painter. However, Pixar later developed the surroundings and toys in the image of a truck, and restored the train at 1:1, which was exhibited at the Disney D23 exhibition last August.

For the behavior of Pixar animation, the painter’s lawyer called it "a very bad example of infringement" and will claim compensation from the other party according to the number of times the infringing image appeared after the film was released. "Forward" is expected to be released on March 6, 2020. At present, Pixar Animation has not given any response. (Text/Wanding)

Pakistan | Architect Yasmen Larry

Won the 2020 Jane Drew Architecture Award.

According to dezeen website, Yasmeen Lari, Pakistan’s first female architect, was awarded the 2020 Jane Drew Architecture Award, which aims to improve the image of female architects.

Larry is 79 years old. Since 2000, she has provided advice to UNESCO and rebuilt tens of thousands of people affected by floods and earthquakes in Pakistan.

Larry was born in Dragazihan, Pakistan, and grew up in Rajal. At the age of 15, she went to London for a holiday and finally stayed in the UK to continue her studies. In 1964, after graduating from Oxford Institute of Technology (now Oxford Institute of Architecture), Larry returned to Pakistan to set up his own office and became the first female architect in this country.

In the process of architectural practice, Larry has to fight for his female identity in this male-dominated industry while practicing his concept of "barefoot social architecture". In 1973, she designed Pakistan’s first public housing plan. In 1980, she implemented a resettlement plan at her own expense. This huge project enabled 13,000 residents to live in their own houses without having to move out of their own places of work and life.

In addition, Larry also designed many landmark buildings in Pakistan, such as Jinmao Center in Karachi and Pakistan National Oil Depot. She also founded the Pakistan Heritage Foundation with her husband, Suhail Zaheer Lari.

In 2000, Larry closed his personal office and devoted himself to using bamboo and mud to help the victims build houses. After the flood in 2010, she used bamboo, a fast-growing sustainable material, to help build 40,000 houses in four years, and these structures withstood the floods in 2012 and 2013. In 2013 and 2015, when the country suffered an earthquake disaster, she designed an earthquake-resistant shelter with bamboo structure.

"I often tell my colleagues not to treat the affected families as poor people who need relief, but to give them due respect and treat them as customers who cooperate with us." Larry once said this. (Text/Qian Xueer)

France | Artist Sina Sidila

As the first Algerian artist to represent France in the Venice Biennale next year.

Sina Sidila

Recently, according to foreign media reports, Zineb Sedira, an Algerian-born French artist, will represent France in the Venice Biennale in 2021, which is the first time that an Algerian-born French artist has represented the country in this Biennale (Editor’s Note: After eight years of war, France agreed to its colony Algeria’s independence in 1962, and Sedira was born in 1963). Sidila’s parents are Algerians. She was born in Paris, went to university in London and completed her undergraduate studies at Central Saint Martin College. Now she lives in south London.

"As an Algerian born in France and living in Britain, Sidila’s multiple identities have enabled her to create calm but unforgettable photography and video installations, which question memory, migration and the spread of history," the Guggenheim Art Museum, which collects her works, wrote on its website.

Not long ago, Sidila held her solo exhibition at the Jeu de Paume in Paris, showing her works "The End of the Road" (2010) and "Sea of Time" (2011). In the video work Mother Tongue in 2002, artists tried to talk about their childhood memories with their mothers and daughters in their respective mother tongues (French, Arabic and English). A French political commentator said that Sidila’s participation in the Biennale on behalf of France is of great symbolic significance, because the relationship between France and Algeria has always been tense.

Sina Sidila’s Mother Tongue

So far, Sidila has exhibited her works in Tate Art Museum in London, Morison Art Museum in Tokyo and Brooklyn Art Museum in new york, and was nominated for the Marcel Duchamp Award in 2015. (Text/Qian Xueer)
